VHS-90 Spherical Vector Hydrophone

 

Introduction

Vector Hydrophone-Spherical (VHS) can be classified as pressure-gradient (pg) type sensor, and act as inertia type sensor. For the inertial sensor where accelerometer fixed into a rigid body, under the motion of acoustic pressure waves, the rigid body follows the movement of its surrounding and the accelerometer picks up the particle motion.

The spherical vector hydrophones are made of three pairs of accelerators fixed in three orthogonal directions. These sensors and their preamplifiers are fixed onto a base block and sealed into a polymer ball. To keep vector hydrophone in suitable orientation, three pairs of suspend ring are attached on the outside of the polymer ball.  There are six pressure hydrophones set under the suspend ring, all output of six hydrophones are parallel together in one output,  to obtain the Omni-direction.

The structure

The spherical vector hydrophone is made of three pairs of accelerators set in three orthogonal directions. These sensors and their preamplifiers are fixed onto a base block and sealed into a polymer ball. The signals from sensors will be output separately through a multi-core cable. To keep a vector hydrophone in suitable orientation in application, three pairs fixing ring are attached on the outside shell ball. The diagram of a vector hydrophone is shown in the Figure 1.

Signal output and power supply

Signals related to the particle velocities in three orthogonal directions are output through 3 pairs of core wires, a cable with 9 core wires can be adopted for both power supply and signal output. Taking advantage of the preamplifier, the cable can be extended for hundreds meters while the sensitivity of a hydrophone will be kept unchangeable. The type of power supply is UTC3124-4.

Installation

In application, a vector hydrophone should be fixed on a rigid frame with an elastic rope or a spring; so that the hydrophone can remain freely suspend in water.  Since the elastic rope/spring and the vector hydrophone will become a resonating system, its resonant frequency should be set blow the working frequency range. Figure 2 is sample of vector hydrophone installation.
